The Republic of Singapore (English: Republic of Singapore), or Singapore for short, formerly known as Singapura, Sing Chau or Sing Tao, and known as the Lion City, is an island nation in Southeast Asia with a parliamentary republican political system and the capital city of Singapore. [Singapore is located at the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula and the entrance to the Straits of Malacca, and consists of Singapore Island and 63 nearby islands, of which the island accounts for 88.5% of the country's area.
