The Republic of Singapore (English: Republic of Singapore), or Singapore for short, formerly known as Singapura, Sing Chau or Sing Tao, and known as the Lion City, is an island nation in Southeast Asia with a parliamentary republican political system and the capital city of Singapore. [Singapore is located at the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula and the entrance to the Straits of Malacca, and consists of Singapore Island and 63 nearby islands, of which the island accounts for 88.5% of the country's area. The island of Singapore is approximately 50 km east to west and 26 km north to south, with a land area of 728.6 km2. As of August 2021, Singapore has a total population of 5,686,000, with 4,404,000 citizens and permanent residents. The main ethnic groups are Chinese, Malay, and Indian.
Singapore is a city-state, so there are no provinces or cities, but rather the country is divided into five communities (administrative regions) in a manner consistent with metropolitan planning, designated as the Northeast, Southeast, Northwest, Southwest, and Central District Social Councils, which in 2020 are divided into 31 constituencies, including 14 single and 17 catchment areas.
